Donald Trump’s presidency has caused a political awakening.
Already there are protests across North America. And increasingly, people are willing to speak out against Trump’s divisive politics.
Dave Chappelle had a great monologue on SNL. Widespread critiques have come from the NBA. And many more are taking a stand against intolerance. The latest group to call out the president and his cronies is the cast of Hamilton.
This past week Vice President Mike Pence attended a production of Hamilton: An American Musical. The audience booed him as he took his seat. And once the show finished the cast took a moment to address Pence.
Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical, we really do. We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us — our planet, our children, our parents — or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us.
Again, we truly thank you for sharing this show. This wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men [and] women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.
Afterwards, Donald Trump took to Twitter to wave his hands.
Surprisingly, Pence had the best response, telling his children “that’s what freedom sounds like.”
